Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speaking. She founded Feminist Frequency the website which hosts videos and commentary analyzing portrayals of women in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency is a non-for profit website that focuses on the representation of women in pop stories of culture - was created and is directed by Sarkeesian. As well as working to bring awareness to the harassment and targeted attack on women and other minorities in online spaces she is committed to breaking down the stigmas and stereotypes associated with popular culture. Holding a master's degree in the field of political and social thinking at York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaking engagement and has given talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Passionate about issues of gender identity and feminism from the age of 7, she started her site Feminist Frequency in 2009 while studying at the university. In 2009, the ambitious young woman was slammed by the Internet for starting a web featuring a series about gender and videogames. The woman was not stopped by the harassment, actually, it just reinforced her desire to become a media critic and feminist. Numerous awards have been given to her for her contributions to the field she contributed to. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit that explores the representations of women within pop media and the narratives that surround them.
